Once upon a time there was a very greedy man who was also a funny person. His name was Chol. He was a workaholic and a fisherman, in Dinka called Adep.
One day he went to the swamp areas, and there was a very big lake called Nyieyoom. This lake was on the border between two villages one in the east and another in the west. All of those who were near Lake Nyieyoom were fighting about the boundaries to the lake; each side said that the lake was for their ancestor.
In Nyieyoom, after a few days Chol was looking for the lotus or waterlilies in the lake, and the people were fighting on the lakeside. Suddenly one man was speared with a very sharp spear and fell on his waterlilies and died. When Chol saw that, he came outside into the lake and took a speared man away from his lotus and said to him, you were fighting in this swamp area like the cattle that were grazing. What did the cattle do? They graze and drink here? What were you fighting about? Then he returned to look after his work.
Mr Chol and other many, people came to fish in the lake people fought about. He talked about the fishing with his wife because he wanted her to go and he could look after their child. He tricks his wife after she went to fish.
Chol saw his wife had gone and then he carried his child to fish because he was a greedy man. So he wanted much more fish. He followed his wife with care so she did not to see him.
After fishing, he put the fish in front of him and the child behind him and said, if the child falls off I should heard it but if the fish fall off I shouldn’t hear it.
Eventually his wife saw him and she was very shocked that her husband carried her child to fish. She asked him ‘why have you brought the child to fish with you? There was an audience maybe they would see the child? He said where does your child grow up? Not in this audience or village? His wife was silent.
On another day he found a dead buffalo when he was going to fish. He gave his fish to the near person and said you can’t say one day that CHOL wasn’t a good generous man. When the fishing finished, he went to see his dead buffalo.
He couldn’t find it. It only pretended to be a dead one. His hope for the meat was over. He found nothing in place. He quickly ran after the people, he gave his to them. When he reached them he would take his fish back from the basket. It was too late; it was in the cooking pot! He waited until it was cooked and then ate it.
Chol was a man of the people. He was encouraging an exhausted people whose don’t want to form their worked.
